Today’s title is: Emotional Support Goat.

Someone at work said that a few airlines are no longer allowing people to bring bugs, spiders, snakes or birds onto planes as “emotional support animals”. I know there are people with actual disabilities, but I think a lot people out there are taking advantage of the rules. If your dog barks, or your animal goes wandering around, then you are just a jerk trying to take advantage of the rules. And ruining things for people who really do need animals.

I once saw a guy bring a dog into the grocery store. What is wrong with people that they think everybody has to roll over for them? (See what I did there?)

Plus, my mom is allergic to most dogs. Why should she have to put up with a dog because you are too weak-minded to travel without Fee-fee? Some people have very bad allergic reactions. Don’t they have rights too? Amazingly, ten or so years ago people were able to fly without needing Mr Fluffygums to keep them safe.

I think I need to bring along Helga, my emotional support Swedish contortionist and supermodel. She helps me feel good.

Someone at work thought that “Emotional Support Goat” would be a good band name. Someone else thought it would be a good DJ name, but I think “DJ Goat” is enough.

More Titles

Here are a few more titles.

Sometimes People Just Die

I have been getting into post-rock. I listen to a YouTube channel at work with a lot of post-rock, and some of the songs have interesting titles. One band that I like is Collapse Under The Empire.

Penobscot Washer Girl

Whenever someone claims they are part Native American, they always say one of their ancestors was a “Cherokee Princess.” Never another tribe. Never a male ancestor. And never a commoner.

Maybe some people are just dumb. I guess some people think, “I’m white, I have dark hair, I must be part Native American! Therefore, Cherokee Princess!” Granted, some families have been here a while. Maybe some people are part Native American. But why is it always a Cherokee princess?

And for the record, lots of white people have dark hair.

Transparent Codpiece

I am not naked, m’lady, I am wearing a transparent codpiece.

I have no idea how this occurred to me.

Recursive Fury

This one is not one that occurred to me.

University of Bristol Professor Stephan Lewandowsky (and two other researchers) published a paper stating that climate change denial is associated with a belief in conspiracy theories. The work was based on surveys filled out by readers of climate change denial sites who were invited to participate.

The response of many climate deniers was that Lewandowsky et al did not in fact use  responses from true climate change deniers, but instead from people who only claimed to be climate change deniers. The assertion is that the responders were people who accepted the science of climate change, but claimed to be deniers to make the deniers look bad. Some climate change deniers insisted this was done in collusion with the researchers.

In other words, when accused of being conspiracy theorists, climate change deniers insisted they were not, and that any allegation that they were conspiracy theorists was in fact, a conspiracy.

He then wrote another paper called “”Recursive fury: Conspiracist ideation in the blogosphere in response to research on conspiracist ideation”.  This got the deniers more upset, and some threatened legal action against the journal that published the paper. This second paper was retracted.

At the time of this writing (early February, 2015), you can find the second paper on a site hosted by the University of Western Australia here.

Step Out Of The Machine

There are some experiments are looking at cosmic rays. One of the results will be that physicists will be able to determine if the universe is real, or just a simulation.

Here is an article in Wired magazine. Here is one from Forbes, of all places. Here is one from Discovery. Here is a link to a scientific paper.

What if we are in a simulation? Will whoever is running it end it? Or will they reveal themselves?

(This is not really a Star Trek related post, but an image from a scene on the holodeck seemed appropriate.)

New blog titleDachshund Revival

Or Dachshund Renaissance if you want to impress the SAT crowd.

Update 2013-01-13_23.24.36:

This occurred to me because someone said that due to World War I and World War II, Dachshunds became very unpopular in the USA because the breed originated in Germany. The Dachshund population shrank dramatically, and did not rebound until the late 1970s or so. In the UK owners started calling them “Liberty Hounds” to disassociate them from Germany.

And I thought “Freedom Fries” was a low point.
