2013-11 Dividend Income Report

Here is the dividend report for November, 2013.

The total income for the month was $252.75. The income for the year up through the end of the month was $2,811.61.

The income for November, 2012 was $247.99, and the income for 2012 up through the end of November was $2898.91.

So the monthly income went up over last year, but the yearly income is still under last year’s total. I made more this month even though I sold some stocks over the past year. CAT was one of the companies that I sold and paid out in November. I think I will make more in December, 2013 than I did in December, 2012, but the total income for the year will be lower. The reasons are that I sold some stocks, and some companies pushed up their dividends due to the fake uncertainty we had last year. I think the idea that a company that increased its dividend for decades would cut its dividend because taxes went up a few percentage points is stupid.

Here are the stocks and the income amounts for November, 2013:

  • AT&T: $25.77
  • WGL Holdings Inc: $13.23
  • ABM Industries Inc: $8.10
  • Lowe’s Cos Inc: $9.44
  • Air Products & Chemicals Inc: $10.79

  • Colgate-Palmolive: $35.81
  • Clorox Co: $37.98
  • Hormel Foods Corp: $7.92

The income for October, 2012 was $225.14, and the yearly income for 2012 through the end of October was $2,650.92.

The income stream is pretty lean. I have not bought any more stocks recently. I still think many stocks are pretty expensive. Many of the stocks that I own and/or am looking at have P/E ratios above 20.

Here are the stocks and the income amounts for October, 2013:

2013-09 Dividend Income

Here is the dividend income report for September, 2013.

The monthly dividend income came out to $395.65. The yearly income so far is $2374.05. This was the most income I have gotten from stocks in one month without getting any special dividends or dividends from Vodaphone.

The income for September 2012 was $315.21, and the yearly income up through that month was $2425.78.

I think my dividend income for 2012 will turn out to be higher than my income for 2013. Despite the fact that I sold a few stocks late in 2012 and in early 2013, the gap between 2012 and 2013 is shrinking. But my income was still greater in 2012 at this point. Also, some companies in 2012 accelerated their dividend payments due to uncertainty over the tax law. As I wrote before, I think that uncertainty was due to stupidity and fearmongering. All of these companies are still paying dividends. Most of them have increased them.

I did buy more shares of ConocoPhillips. I now have 100 shares of COP, and of all my stocks they pay the most per month. When I started buying stocks I got as many shares as I could get for $1000. I stopped doing that fairly quickly and tried to get at least 50 shares of each. My goal now is to get all my stocks up to 100 shares. For some I have 100 shares due to splits. I plan on getting those up to 200. This may be a multi-year project.

Right now I think a lot of the stocks I own are a bit expensive. I know one of my taglines is “Price Doesn’t Matter.” To be more precise, I think that price doesn’t matter as much to a dividend investor as it does to someone who is investing solely for capital gains. Right now the PE ratios of a lot of stocks are over 20. I would prefer to buy when they are under 18, and under 15 is better. For a long time there was a yearly cycle in which stocks seemed to peak around May, and got lower until November. Then they went up from November to May. The financial crisis in 2008 seemed to disrupt that cycle. It looked to me like that yearly pattern was starting to come back in 2011 and 2012. But now in 2013 the prices of stocks just keep going up and up.

There are exceptions to this. The PE ratios for most oil companies is around 10. I don’t know what the significance of that is. Is it bad for a group of stocks to be under the average PE ration of 16 while everything else is above it? I know a few people who have been involved in investing for a while. I will contact them and get their opinions.

I toy with the idea of making a promise to buy something in January regardless of what the prices are.

Here are the stocks and the income amounts for September, 2013:

  • Black Hills Corp: $12.87
  • Intel: $11.06
  • AFLAC Inc: $18.25
  • American States Water Co: $21.50
  • Bemis Co Inc: $16.43
  • ConocoPhillips: $70.59
  • Vectren Corp: $19.31

2013-08 Dividend Income Report

It is time for the dividend income report for August, 2013.

The dividend income for the month was $305.11. The income for 2013 up through the end of August was $1978.40. There was a semi-annual dividend from Vodafone this month. Without Vodafone, the income was $249.23. In May, 2013, the income was $242.65.

In 2012, the income for August was $316.04 with Vodafone, and $262.87 without Vodafone. The income for 2012 up through the end of August was $2110.57.

It looks like Verizon will be buying the 45% of Verizon Wireless that Vodafone owns from Vodafone. So far I do not know what Vodaphone will do with the money that it will get from the deal (if it happens). The choices are a special dividend, or to reinvest in the company.

Here are the stocks:

  • AT&T: $25.45
  • WGL Holdings Inc: $13.12
  • ABM Industries Inc: $8.05
  • Lowe’s Cos Inc: $9.40
  • Vodafone: $55.88
  • Clorox Co: $37.66
  • Air Products & Chemicals Inc: $10.72
  • Abbott Laboratories: $7.35
  • Colgate-Palmolive: $35.61
  • Hormel Foods Corp: $7.89
  • Northwest Natural Gas Co: $24.67

It is time for the dividend income report for July, 2013.

The dividend income for the month was $180.57. The dividend income for the year through the end of July was $1673.29.

The dividend income for July, 2012 was $219.72, and the income for 2012 through July was $1794.53. Perhaps selling the stocks that I sold was not a good idea. I have more cash, but I have less income, and a lot of stocks have pretty high PE ratios.

Here are the stocks:

  • Automatic Data Processing: $24.35
  • Coca-Cola Co: $29.42
  • MDU Resources Group Inc.: $9.31
  • Kimberly-Clark: $43.37
  • Chubb Corp: $9.41

2013-05 Dividend Income Report

Here is the dividend income report for May, 2013.

The monthly dividend income came out to $242.65. The yearly income so far is $1,141.24.

The income for May, 2012 was $258.15, and the yearly income up through that month was $1,268.97.

It looks like it might be a while until my dividend income for a month is greater than the same month a year ago. Given the decline in the market that we are starting to see, I might buy something soon.

Here are the stocks:

  • AT&T: $25.15
  • WGL Holdings Inc: $12.99
  • ABM Industries Inc: $8.00
  • Lowe’s Cos Inc: $8.32

2013-04 Dividend Income Report

It is time for the April, 2013 dividend income report.

The total income for April, 2013 was $179.23. The income for 2013 through the end of April was $898.59.

The income for April, 2012 was $218.56, and the income for 2012 through the end of April was $1010.82.

I sold a few stocks that I thought were not growing their dividend quickly enough, or had gone up in price a lot. (Granted, in the past few months a lot of stocks have gone up in price.) So I have fewer stocks, but the income from the stocks I have kept has increased.

There was an interesting milestone: I got $43.01 from Kimberly-Clark. That is the most I have gotten for a regular dividend.

Here are the stocks:

  • Automatic Data Processing: $24.18
  • Coca-Cola Co: $29.22
  • MDU Resources Group Inc: $9.25
  • Chubb Corp: $9.36
  • Kimberly-Clark: $43.01
  • Illinois Tool Works: $19.73
  • Piedmont Natural Gas Inc: $17.50
  • Sysco Corp: $14.89
  • RPM International Inc: $12.09

2013-03 Dividend Income Report

Here is the dividend income report for March, 2013.

The dividend income for March, 2013 was $360.85. The income for 2013 through the end of March was $719.36.

The income for March, 2012 was $294.68, and the income for 2012 through the end of March was $792.26.

A lot of companies brought January and in some cases February dividends forward in December, so I think that the yearly comparisons will not be too good for a while. I also sold some stocks. Most of the stocks I sold pay out in April, so the April totals will be lower than last year.

Here are the stocks:

  • AFLAC Inc: $18.01
  • American States Water Co: $18.60
  • Black Hills Corp: $12.64
  • Bemis Co Inc: $16.21
  • ConocoPhillips: $33.78
  • Intel: $10.84
  • Vectren Corp: $18.90
  • Sonoco Products Co: $18.99
  • Chevron: $19.41
  • Emerson Electric Co: $21.11
  • Questar Corp: $8.87
  • Exxon Mobil Corp: $32.36
  • Johnson & Johnson: $19.83
  • 3M Co: $8.07
  • Walgreen Co: $15.08
  • Archer-Daniels-Midland Co: $11.82
  • Dover Corp: $7.70
  • Consolidated Edison Inc: $17.03
  • Valspar Corp: $13.07
  • RLI Corp: $17.04
  • Eaton Corporation: $21.49

2013-02 Dividend Income Report

Here is the dividend income report for February, 2013.

The monthly dividend income came out to $248.39. The yearly income so far is $358.51. Vodafone paid a dividend in February. Without Vodafone, the income was $221.67.

The income for February, 2012 was $308.90, and the yearly income up through that month was $497.58.

There were a couple of stocks that usually pay in February that pulled them forward to December. I think that from now on we will go back to our regular dividend schedule. But I think that the income will be less than last year, at least for a while. I have sold a few stocks. But I plan on buying more soon.

Here are the stocks:

  • AT&T: $24.82
  • WGL Holdings Inc: $12.26
  • Lowe’s Cos Inc: $8.29
  • Vodafone: $26.72
  • Air Products & Chemicals Inc: $9.52
  • Texas Instruments: $10.87
  • Abbvie: $20.80
  • Abbott Laboratories: $7.35
  • Colgate-Palmolive: $32.10
  • Clorox Co: $33.43
  • Hormel Foods Corp: $7.82
  • Northwest Natural Gas Co: $24.18
  • Procter & Gamble: $30.23
