Guns

This is a gun page for everybody else.

After Trump won the 2024 election, I decided to get a gun. Now in early 2026, I think more people should get a gun.

The people whose job it is to protect you are now the ones you need protection from. I don’t think I need to post any links explaining why people should get a gun. After you do, find some friends with guns and protect your community.

For someone who doesn’t have a “Don’t Tread On Me” flag, gun culture can be alienating. I plan on writing some posts explaining the steps to go through to get a gun and train with it regularly. This will not be a definitive guide. I will write the sort of thing I wish I had a year ago.

I have a category of posts about guns here.

At this time, I only own two semiautomatic handguns, so most of the advice will be about that.

A common question is if there are any left-leaning gun makers, sellers or YouTube channels. I cover that here.

The basic steps are:

  • Lessons
  • Range membership
  • Get a gun
  • Case
Gun ranges do not like people walking up with a gun in their hand. You could put a handgun in a backpack, but at least put it in a different pocket than the ammo and magazines, and leave the magazines out.
More guns will mean bigger cases. Getting a long gun will require a very large case.
  • Ammo
  • Ammo loader, aka magazine loader.
For common calibers larger than 22LR, the springs in the magazines have a lot of tension, and it can be difficult to load the bullets. A magazine loader will make your life easier.
Multiple calibers may necessitate multiple loaders.
  • Cleaning kit and a cleaning cord
You should still do a full cleaning regularly with a full kit, but running a cord through the barrel after every trip to the range is easier and faster, and a good idea. Happy gun, happy life.
Multiple calibers may necessitate multiple kits and/or cords.
  • Extra Magazines
If you are really worried about things going pear-shaped, having more magazines is more useful than having more guns.
  • License or permit if required in your state.
  • Home storage (locked case or safe if you have young children living with you).
  • Insurance or legal retention service if you carry.
  • A holster is a good idea if you plan on carrying a gun all the time.
  • Find some sane non-MAGA gun friends. Do not start an anti-ICE vigil by yourself.
